The experiment underway at three airports comes in reaction to a recent state law that makes it harder to classify people as contract workers rather than as employees.

For a growing population of independent workers, the flexibility of contract work comes with the headache of dealing with taxes and other issues that employers would normally handle.

It says last year, 10.1 percent of the workforce was independent contractors, down from 10.7 percent in 2005. Those figures appear to go against other surveys showing huge growth in contract work.
