The cause of the crash that killed 66 people in May has been a mystery, and no group has claimed responsibility for bringing down the plane. The pilot never issued a distress call.

The investigators were able to successfully download information from the flight data recorder, and hope it will shed some light on the mysterious crash.

A French company and an Egyptian agency say the ship Laplace has picked up signals that appear to belong to a flight recorder from EgyptAir MS804, which crashed into the Mediterranean last month.

Egypt's president says the submarine is heading to the area where the plane went down on Thursday. He cautions that determining what caused the crash could take "a lot of time."

Authorities had reported finding wreckage from the plane Thursday but later retracted those claims. The debris found Friday is said to include passenger belongings but not flight data recorders.
