Officials say it’s some of the worst flooding to hit the area in decades.

It's the first update to the region's maps that show areas with a high risk of floods since 2009.

National industry experts recently recognized NCDOT's efforts during the National Operations Center of Excellence's annual awards event.

Heavy rain and flooding from the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal forced dozens of people to flee their homes in central North Carolina, officials said Monday.

"Helene’s Unheard Warnings" is the title of a new ProPublica article that takes a deep dive into the catastrophic damage left behind by the storm. It also chronicles how, even with dire warnings from local and national outlets, Helene caught entire communities off guard.

The arts have always been integral to the Appalachian experience. Helene led to a pause in much of the area’s creative output. But six months later, many artists are back at work and incorporating the tragedy into their projects.

In the second installment of "With Grace and Grit: A mountain community responds to Helene," Paul Garber reports on Lansing’s Bridge to Recovery. The nonprofit was launched post-Helene to help restore vital spans that are not maintained by the state.
