The president's loyalists are poised to sweep the National Assembly elections Sunday, adding to the litany of woes facing his chief rival, Juan Guaidó.

After lawmakers allied with President Nicolás Maduro shut out the opposition, Juan Guaidó said he will try to take his rightful place as president of the National Assembly.

Opposition lawmakers, including rival head of state Juan Guaidó, were blocked by security forces from attending a National Assembly session, enabling loyalists of the president to elect a new leader.

On Saturday, thousands of Venezuelans crossed the newly reopened border, seeking basic supplies like food and medicine that are scarce in their own country.

"Time is not on our side," opposition leader Juan Guaidó told NPR in an interview in Caracas on Wednesday. "Time is running against all Venezuelans."

Edgar Zambrano, vice president of the National Assembly, was detained by intelligence agents Wednesday night. Nicolás Maduro has increased pressure on the opposition since last week's failed uprising.

Supporters of opposition leader Juan Guaidó took to the streets Tuesday in the "final phase" of the uprising. Venezuelan officials said they had quelled what they called a coup attempt.
