Rescue efforts will soon come to a close in Mexico, where a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed hundreds of people. Survivors displaced from damaged homes don't know when they'll get the okay to return.

The elementary school partly collapsed during Tuesday's earthquake, burying both students and teachers. In the aftermath, rescue workers and volunteers have struggled to save lives and preserve hope.

The magnitude 8.1 quake hit off Mexico's southern coast, toppling houses in Chiapas state and causing buildings more than 600 miles away in Mexico City to sway violently.
