Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi, accused of plotting the Mumbai attack that left more than 160 people dead, walked out of a Pakistani prison on Friday. The move threatens to strain relations with India.

Police registered an unrelated kidnapping case against Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi. He is believed to have been the operational chief of a group blamed for the deadly 2008 attack on Mumbai.

Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi's lawyers argued that extended detention infringed on his rights because he had been granted bail by an anti-terrorism court. The Islamabad High Court agreed.

Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi is one of seven men charged with planning and helping to carry out the 2008 attack that killed more than 160 people. Federal prosecutors had opposed the bail plea.
