Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 spacesuit is about to go back on public display after a Smithsonian effort to preserve it. The effort wasn't to make it pristine. Lunar dust still covers the boots.

In 1969 it was the orbiting home and refuge for the first astronauts who walked on the moon. Today, after decades on display in a Smithsonian museum, the module is being restored for a national tour.

The capsule called Columbia hasn't left the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., since 1976. It's heading out on tour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

The crew of Apollo 11 drew a calendar on the wall of their command module, as well as a tribute to the spacecraft, and jotted down numbers and other information from mission control communications.
