Nordstrom chief executive Erik Nordstrom said the Seattle-based retailer is exiting Canada because it does not see a realistic path to profitability for the business in the country.

The luxury department store chain is opening a 320,000- square-foot store in Manhattan as retailers such as Barneys and Forever 21 file for bankruptcy and more competition comes from online brands.

Nordstrom Local, which opens next month in West Hollywood, will offer personal stylists. The retailer believes the streamlined experience reflects the way many people want to do their shopping now.

This week, the Internet discovered that Nordstrom sells premium denim with a "crackled, caked-on muddy coating" — that is, fake dirt. Former Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe had some thoughts about that.

The president's senior adviser appeared on TV last week and urged shoppers to buy the president's daughter's line of clothes, jewelry and shoes, after Nordstrom decided to drop it.
