The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction plans to help local school districts make tough spending decisions as federal COVID-19 relief funds expire this year. 

North Carolina’s elementary schoolers are improving their reading skills according to new data presented to the state board of education. 

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services teamed up with the state Department of Public Instruction to compose an Action Plan to address what is described as an “urgent” youth mental health and behavioral health crisis. The plan, released on Tuesday, cites a needed investment in the state’s school systems.

According to a statewide report, fewer North Carolina public school teachers left the profession last year compared to the year before. But beginning teachers left at higher rates than those with more experience. 

A statewide report shows weapon possession incidents have increased in North Carolina schools, including in the Triad, from pre-pandemic levels.
