The crash raised new questions about the safety of the Osprey, which has been involved in multiple fatal accidents over its relatively short time in service.

The CV-22 Osprey carrying eight American personnel crashed last Wednesday off Yakushima island during a training mission.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported that rescuers found three people near the crash site, but their condition is unknown.

The Marines were killed in the crash of a V-22B Osprey aircraft during a NATO exercise unrelated to the Ukraine war, officials said.

A rescue effort had saved 23 of the 26 service members who were on the plane when it went down on Saturday.
