A North Carolina bill forcing sheriffs and jailers to comply with requests from federal immigration agents to detain inmates accused of serious crimes for up to 48 hours will be sent to a team of negotiators to discuss changes to the legislation.

Republican U.S. Senator Thom Tillis has introduced legislation that would require local law enforcement officials to adhere to detainer requests made by federal authorities.

Gov. Kay Ivey is moving to stop the practice, which has enabled sheriffs to pocket leftover money.
