7.6 magnitude quake strikes off southern Philippines, triggering tsunami warnings

The powerful quake prompted many villagers to flee their homes in panic. Japanese authorities issued evacuation orders in parts of Okinawa. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

An undersea volcano erupted near the Pacific nation of Tonga, sending tsunami waves crashing across the shore there and around the Pacific, including a surges along the U.S. West Coast.

A Hawaii Civil Defense Warning Device is designed to sound an alert siren during natural disasters. Wednesday evening, police activity caused a false tsunami alarm.

The alert, which was "inadvertently triggered" during Honolulu Police Department training, angered residents who recalled a similar false alarm last year warning of an imminent missile attack.
