Members of a group that wants to halt new oil and gas projects threw soup over the masterpiece in London's National Gallery, but caused no discernible damage to the glass-covered painting.

The painting, titled The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring 1884, was stolen early Monday morning from the Singer Laren museum near Amsterdam. Police say the thieves smashed a glass entrance.

One of the most prolific post-impressionist artists Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in July 1890. The revolver believed to have been used by the painter sold for more than $180,000.

The homeowners were fined thousands of dollars by Mount Dora officials for making their two-story house and surrounding wall look like Van Gogh's famous painting. On Tuesday, the mayor apologized.
