Americans woke up Friday to news that the president and first lady both had tested positive for the coronavirus. For many, reactions to the news fell along political lines.
A mass shooting there this spring that left 12 dead has put the issue into sharp focus. Democrats — bolstered by large cash infusions from gun control groups — hope to turn the state legislature blue.
An independent investigator said he's heard several such reports. The shooter, a public utilities engineer, was African American, and both black and white colleagues were among his victims.
"We must do more than give our thoughts and prayers; we must give Virginians the action they deserve," Northam said of the shooting at a municipal complex in which 12 victims and the suspect died.
Most of the victims were city employees, and many worked as engineers, account clerks or administrative assistants. The suspected gunman was also a longtime municipal employee.
