DOJ watchdog finds missteps by prison officials ahead of Whitey Bulger's killing

The Justice Department's watchdog found a string of missteps by federal Bureau of Prison officials but no malicious intent in their handling of Bulger's transfer to the prison where he was killed.

Three men, including a Mafia hitman, have been charged in the 2018 killing of notorious Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger in a West Virginia prison, the Justice Department said.

A skull ring owned by James "Whitey" Bulger is being auctioned off with other items seized after his arrest, with proceeds from the sale going to the mobster's victims and their families.

Stephen Rakes said the gangster forced him — at gunpoint — to sell a liquor store. The cause of Rakes' death isn't yet known. Authorities say there were "no obvious signs of trauma." Rakes, who said he could speak for those who fear Bulger, was told this week he would not be called to the stand.
