Vermont was the last state to have never sent a woman to Congress. But on Tuesday, Democrat Becca Balint won her race, and will become the first woman and first LGBTQ person to represent the state.

Laphonza Butler, the political organization's third president, will be the first Black woman and first mother to lead the group. She is a former senior adviser to Kamala Harris and Airbnb executive.

She was nominated to lead the Social Democratic party on Sunday after her predecessor stepped down. The four other parties in her coalition are all led by women.
