Forsyth County Head Start Site Will Close Because of a Loss in Federal Funding

Nationwide, Head Start programs are feeling the painful impact of sequestration, or federal budget cuts. According to the Administration for Children and Families, about 70,000 children nationwide will lose access to Head Start because of the cuts. In Forsyth County, Family Services in Forsyth County is bracing to close one of its Head Start sites, because of the loss in funding.

Teacher Feature: Ethnobotanist Tom Carlson

"Office hours are some of my favorite hours of the week," says professor Tom Carlson, a medical doctor, ethnobotanist and instructor of 1700 students annually at the University of California, Berkeley. One of Carlson's former students, SciFri associate senior producer Christopher Intagliata, says Carlson's class got him on the path toward science. In this "Teacher Feature," Intagliata tells his former teacher what the class meant to him.
