The Guilford County Board of Education wants state legislators to allow certain undocumented immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition. Board members consider this a bold and important step forward.
Earlier this month, the board unanimously agreed to include the issue in their 2015 legislative agenda.
The News and Record of Greensboro reports they took the matter a step further at Thursday's board meeting, unanimously supporting a resolution asking lawmakers to grant in-state tuition to certain immigrants. The resolution argues that doing so would create economic and workforce development benefits.
To attend public colleges and universities in North Carolina, all undocumented students have to pay out-of-state tuition, which can be more than three times higher than in-state costs.
Advocate Addy Jeffrey said the board's vote is “historic.”
They face an uphill battle, however. One board member said the legislative committee has been grappling with finding ways to get legislators to pay attention to their recommendations.
