SciWorks Radio is a production of 88.5 WFDD and SciWorks, the Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem.

The Galapagos islands are famous for their association with Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution by natural selection. Being isolated, the islands acted much like a controlled laboratory for clear observation of basic evolutionary adaptations among species.

13 Year Old Invents To Save Lives

SciWorks Radio is a production of 88.5 WFDD and SciWorks, the Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem.

Right in front of you is an invention. Your desk, the computer, your watch, the plate your breakfast is sitting on. The radio you're listening to right now. Even the most basic items around us were invented. Though no one ponders the inception of the door knob when entering a room, we do tend to celebrate the giants who gave us things like light bulbs or mechanized automobile production. Necessity really is the mother of invention, and sometimes that need is a means to keep your coffee warm. Other times the need to save lives. That's where Chase Lewis from Raleigh, North Carolina, comes in. At age 13 he invented potentially life-saving technology, earning prizes and patents along the way.

The Ethics of Robotics: A Discussion with Andre Mandarino

Robotics. The idea of man-made machines that need not be controlled by mankind itself. The thought has mystified us since the Renaissance. However, with the advent of computers, they have become a reality. Andre Mandarino is a participant in NC FIRST, a non-profit group that encourages young people to learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) through robotics. Radio Camper Noah Barton interviewed him about the Ethics of Robotics.

Paul Kortenaar Celebrates SciWorks' 50th Anniversary

SciWorks, the science and environmental park of Forsyth county, is a scientific museum in the city of Winston-Salem. This year, SciWorks will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Recently, WFDD Radio Camper Lauren James interviewed Paul Kortenaar, the Executive Director at SciWorks.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Kortenaar and speak with him about the museum. Initially, I was a bit intimidated by Paul. At a height far above five feet, he towered over me, but over the course of our interview, Paul revealed to be a gentle giant who was very passionate about his job.
