88.5 WFDD is the recipient of three Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in the categories of “Excellence in Innovation,” “Newscast” and “Overall Excellence.” The Radio Television Digital News Association honors are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news.

This is the first time WFDD has won the “Overall Excellence” award. WFDD's News Director, Emily McCord, says it's further acknowledgement of the organization's expanded, listener-focused coverage, and the entire news team is honored by this recognition.

The “Excellence in Innovation” award highlights the work surrounding last year's Community Conversation on Mental Health. The topic was chosen by WFDD listeners through the Carolina Curious module. At the community conversation, the station gathered feedback from listeners on what coverage they would like to hear as a follow-up; through a vote, listeners and attendees overwhelmingly chose the subject of mental health barriers, specifically, which resulted in a feature report. More information about the event is here, and related coverage available here, here and here.

“Our listeners have always made our coverage possible, but in bringing them into the reporting process, we're able to find amazing stories that we may not have found otherwise,” says McCord. “This award is as much for them as it is for our hard-working news team.”

WFDD competes in a region that includes large market radio stations in North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Regional winners automatically advance to the national Edward R. Murrow Awards competition, with winners being announced in June.
