Guilford County is launching its annual program to provide grants for nonprofit organizations serving the area.

The Community Based Organization (CBO) Awards look to ensure groups can provide what are deemed valuable services. This can range from education and youth development, to support for the arts.

Guilford County Grants Manager Haley Matthews says nonprofits are uniquely able to serve a community's needs.

"They interact with the public in a different way than government can," Matthews says. "So I think it's important for us to involve all stakeholders in government, including nonprofits. And so the CBO process is one way that we kind of involve those stakeholders."

Last year, 72 nonprofits received $1.7 million through the program. Applications will open on January 20 and close on February 28. An information session on the program is scheduled for February 4.
