Winston-Salem officials are celebrating the success and economic impact of the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Food deserts, or low-income areas where grocery stores are more than a mile away, exist in all but one of Winston-Salem’s wards. The city’s Hispanic community is particularly impacted – Second Harvest Food Bank served more Latinos last year than any other demographic. 

Last year, 72 nonprofits received nearly $2 million through the program.

Under the proposal, motor vehicle fees would double and the property tax rate would increase by about 6 cents for every $100 in value.

The race for the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is a crowded one this year, with a total of nine candidates vying for seats. 

The city is partnering with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to buy up and forgive unpaid medical bills. The trend started in Cook County, Ill., and is spreading to cities across the country.

The city of Winston-Salem is finalizing its federal legislative priorities for the next calendar year.  The 2024 Federal Action Plan outlines several issues city officials think should be prioritized by federal legislators. The plan organizes those issues into eight categories, including affordable housing, public safety, and public infrastructure. 

More Winston-Salem customers may soon be able to take rides on rickshaws, or bicycles with passenger carts attached to them.
