Emergency officials are still assessing the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. 

Catastrophic flooding and widespread power, cell service, and internet outages have cut off much of the region from needed resources. State and local agencies are mobilizing to provide support to the area’s more than 1 million residents. 

Several Piedmont organizations are getting involved in relief efforts. Here’s a running list of ways to help:

Samaritan’s Purse of Watauga County

  • Seeking both day and overnight volunteers to assist affected homeowners with tree work, debris cleanup, roof tarping and mud removal. 
  • Volunteers are asked to meet at Alliance Bible Fellowship, 1035 North Carolina HWY 105 Bypass, Boone, N.C., 28607 for orientation. Volunteers will work Monday - Saturday.

Forsyth Humane Society

  • Volunteers are needed to foster pets displaced by the storm. All needed supplies will be provided by the Humane Society. 
  • To get involved, email foster@forsythhumane.org with the subject line “Hurricane Helene Foster" or check here for incoming animals.

YMCA of Greensboro

  • Accepting donations of items including baby formula, pet food, bottled water and hygiene supplies. A full list can be found on its Facebook page.
  • Residents are asked to drop off donations at any Greensboro branch locations or at Camp Weaver. 

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office

  • Accepting donations of items including water, individually wrapped snacks, packaged socks and other hygiene supplies. A full list can be found on its Facebook page. 
  • Donations can be dropped off at 301 N. Church St in Winston-Salem from September 30 until October 2. 

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

  • On Tuesday, October 1, WS/FCS will collect water donations for delivery to Watauga County.
  • Community members are asked to bring cases of bottled water to 475 Corporate Square Drive in Winston-Salem between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. 

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina

  • Hosting a virtual food and fund drive via its website
  • The agency says 10 counties in its service area are facing severe impacts from flooding and power outages, including extensive damage to several local food assistance partners' facilities.

A Simple Gesture Greensboro

  • Hosting a food drive for nonperishable items including peanut butter, granola bars, oatmeal and canned tuna. 
  • Items can be dropped off at seven different locations in Greensboro, five in High Point, and one in Oak Ridge. Addresses can be found here.
