There's still no end in sight for the partial shutdown of the government — or the line of politicians considering a presidential run in 2020. NPR's Ron Elving examines the latest political news.

Gillibrand joins a growing field of Democratic candidates, telling TV host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday that she is launching an exploratory committee and explaining why she has decided to run.

His announcement came Saturday in Texas, after weeks of hinting he was ready to join the 2020 Democratic primary field. "I've always believed with big dreams and hard work anything is possible."

Instead, the 61-year-old investor and activist says he will spend even more of his own money on trying to impeach President Trump.

Older voters and younger voters, former Clinton supporters and Bernie Sanders fans, all say they want a candidate who is electable. "I want somebody to get Trump out of there," said Marilynn Leggio.

"We will do better next time," the U.S. senator from Vermont and former presidential candidate said. As Sanders considers whether to run in 2020, new allegations from his 2016 campaign have emerged.

A key step in running for president: laying out a foreign-policy vision showing he or she can command the military and keep the country safe. Several likely candidates are hard at work on this front.

Florida remains the most important state for Trump in his re-election, and Republicans are just barely hanging on in big races. Democratic gains in Rust Belt states could spell trouble.

Sanders accuses Republicans who ran against Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Andrew Gillum in Florida of using racist strategies after he initially said voters were uncomfortable backing black candidates.
