More than 50 people attempting to register to vote have been killed in a suicide blast in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul. The Islamic State claims responsibility.
Five Congolese soldiers also died, and dozens of peacekeepers were wounded, in the attack on a base in eastern Congo. A U.N. official said it was the bloodiest assault on peacekeepers in 25 years.
"Some people cursed the Assad regime. Some invoked God. And others didn't say a word," a witness tells NPR. Schools have been hit repeatedly during Syria's war and this is one of the worst incidents.
The names of each of the nearly 3,000 victims of the Sept. 11 attacks were read at a ceremony at the World Trade Center site in New York City. Events were held nationwide, including D.C. and Pa.
Police say two other suspected militants were killed in the standoff. They say Tamim Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi-born Canadian, returned to the country in 2013 and supplied guns and arms to militants.
Three officers were killed and three others injured in a shooting in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday. The three slain officers and the suspect have been identified. The motive, however, is still unclear.
The three were detained in raids on Sunday. Belgian police are still trying to identify a third suspect from the airport bombing and have released a 32-second video of CCTV footage over YouTube.
Police are still determining the number of suspects involved. Meanwhile, Salah Abdeslam, the suspect in the Paris attacks who was arrested last week, now says he is not fighting extradition to France.
