Officials in Victoria imposed a snap lockdown after several new cases of the highly contagious U.K. variant of the coronavirus were discovered.

"We will work with everyone involved to facilitate testing as quickly as possible. There will be no matches at Melbourne Park on Thursday," Australian Open officials said in a statement.

Slovenia's Dalila Jakupovic was trying to make the first round of the tournament set to open next week. She had trouble breathing and later told reporters, "I was really scared that I would collapse."

After a year in which she has dealt with some health scares, Williams reclaimed her fitness and her game. She is favored against Angelique Kerber to win her eighth Wimbledon singles title.

It's the seventh Australian Open title for the younger Williams sister, and moves her to the top spot in number of major titles in the Open era.

An independent tribunal has ruled that Sharapova is ineligible after testing positive for meldonium. She said she didn't know at the time that the substance had been banned starting early this year.

The five-time Grand Slam champion said she was notified by the International Tennis Federation several days ago that she tested positive for meldonium.

In Angelique Kerber's first Grand Slam final on Saturday, she defeated Serena Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. In the men's tournament on Sunday, Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray 6-1, 7-5, 7-6.

The BBC and BuzzFeed published an expose about match-fixing in tennis but did not name names of implicated players. Some people, including Roger Federer, have called for the release of names.
