A report issued by the U.N. Development Programme says that the 20th-century thinking about global inequality no longer works in the 21st century.

Sebastián Piñera canceled an Asia-Pacific trade forum and a United Nations climate summit, saying he has to "put the needs of Chileans first."

"We have all heard and understood the message of Chileans," Sebastian Piñera said. "We're working to form a new team that represents change." A million people took part in Friday's demonstration.

The country has been gripped by mass demonstrations and planned union strikes over economic inequality.

Demonstrations against wealth inequality have persisted, despite the fact that President Sebastián Piñera suspended transit fare hikes. There have been at least eight deaths reported.

What started as a fare-dodging protest by students turned violent in Santiago on Friday, as metro stations and buses were burned and riots spilled out into the streets.

Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati faces charges of covering up multiple claims of sexual abuse in Chile's Catholic Church. Pope Francis has named Monsignor Celestino Aos Braco as a temporary replacement.

The two high-ranking retired clerics, Archbishop Francisco José Cox Huneeus and Bishop Marco Antonio Órdenes Fernández, were expelled from the priesthood because of alleged "manifest abuse of minors."
