Germans are grappling with what could be as many as a million asylum-seekers to their country this year, but most say they welcome the new arrivals. A sizeable majority of Germans today think of their country as a land of immigrants, who are vital to keeping it strong as the traditional population ages and shrinks. One of these new Germans is an immigrant from Mozambique who has become a brew master, soccer coach and member of the town council in an eastern German hamlet, where extremists have been attacking asylum-seekers.
