The U.S. Geological Survey said lava was spewing into a neighborhood near the Kilauea volcano, which briefly erupted Thursday, and that a 6.9 magnitude earthquake was reported in the area.

Ground shaking from a preliminary 5.0 magnitude earthquake south of Pu'u O'o caused rockfalls and possibly additional collapse into the crater on Kilauea volcano's East Rift Zone.

The quake Thursday is one of 600 that have been shaking the area near the Big Island's Mount Kilauea since Monday. Geologists fear magma will break though the surface causing widespread destruction.

Much of the inner reef at Oahu's Hanauma Bay is dead after decades of tourism. The state may sign a law banning over-the-counter sunscreens believed to harm coral.
