The CH-53E Super Stallion crashed Tuesday afternoon near El Centro, about 100 miles east of San Diego.

No deaths had been reported as a direct consequence of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck central and southern Mexico earlier Friday.

News images showed thick black smoke issuing from the fiery wreckage at the bottom of a ravine. Seven people were on board the helicopter.

The five people aboard the helicopter were brought to land and treated by paramedics.

In Hawaii, the Coast Guard is leading a large search for 12 service members who were believed to be aboard the transport helicopters.
