China is taking a more confident and active role in the international human rights system, even as the United States pulls back, writes Ted Piccone of the Brookings Institution.
The countries have submitted a request to the International Criminal Court in the Hague for an investigation of alleged human rights abuses in Venezuela dating back to 2014.
Photojournalist and activist Shahidul Alam has helped nurture a generation of South Asian photographers. He was jailed last month on charges of "spreading propaganda and false information."
The human rights team had recently released a report documenting the extrajudicial killing, torture and sexual assault of protesters by the government of President Daniel Ortega.
So far, more than 130,000 people have been sacked from the military, police, civil service and academia in President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's crackdown, known in Turkey as "the purge."

"No regime has oppressed its own citizens more totally or brutally than the cruel dictatorship of North Korea," the president said in January. Human rights experts fear the issue may be ignored now.
On technical grounds, the U.K.'s Supreme Court rejected an attempt to overturn strict abortion limits in Northern Ireland. But the court also said that the law is incompatible with human rights.
