Matteo Renzi had pinned his political future on the proposed constitutional changes, which would have taken some power away from Italy's Parliament. Renzi announced he will resign on Monday.

Italy's had more than 60 governments in the past 70 years. A referendum Sunday is designed to make governing less chaotic, but could bring down the country's leader and give Europe another jolt.

A bidding war was sparked between the United States and Italy over a 2.5-pound truffle, but the winner might have been the city of Philadelphia, which is trying to shine as a gourmet food town.
