Japan has so far avoided the explosion of cases that China and South Korea have seen. The Japan Medical Association has called for declaring an emergency that could lead to a three-week lockdown.

It's one of several places in Asia that did not use draconian lockdown strategies to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

"We want to organize the best Games possible," IOC President Thomas Bach said, adding that "this postponement will require sacrifices and compromises from all parties."

As the virus that causes the COVID-19 illness spreads around the world, governments have a chance to "break the chains of transmission," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says.
