Severe frostbite claimed Xia Boyu's feet during his first failed attempt in 1975. Then, lymphoma claimed his legs beneath the knee. Still, Xia kept trying — and on Monday, he finally reached the top.

The job of guiding climbers up the Himalayas has brought money and development to their communities, but little glory for the Sherpas.

The bodies were discovered in tents by Nepalese Sherpas at Camp IV, the camp closest to the summit of the world's tallest mountain. The victims have not yet been identified.

An American doctor who was trying for a second time to conquer the mountain after surviving an avalanche in 2015 was among those who died.

"We were told we should be raising children instead," Junko Tabei said of the all-female expedition she helped lead on Everest in 1975.

A Japanese man says he wants to show Nepal is safe after the quake and avalanche killed more than 9,000 people there in April.

The magnitude-7.8 temblor hit north of the capital Katmandu, toppling buildings in the capital. Dozens were also killed in neighboring India, China and Bangladesh.

At least 17 people are reported dead on the mountain after a massive quake-triggered avalanche swept through base camp on the south side on Saturday.

Early reports are that at least eight climbers and/or Sherpas have been killed at Everest Base Camp. Others are trapped higher up on the world's tallest peak.
