One of Los Angeles' beloved denizens of the soul/jazz/hip-hop underground invites the likes of Madlib and Kamasi Washington to join him in creating a moving ode to spirituality.
Lage began playing guitar at the age of 5 and appeared on stage at the Grammys at 13. He talks to Fresh Air about growing up a guitar prodigy, his father's gentle coaching and his new trio album.
Into The Light is an imaginary soundtrack for a science-fiction western. The guitarist's "He Is Without His Guns" conveys the urgency of a stand-off, but feels small in its somber movements.
The funky, down-home boogie comes from the beloved Nashville singer-songwriter's first album in six years. "I was so rusty I had to go to a craft store and make collages," Cook says.
"I don't want anybody to do exactly what I'm doing," says the Atlanta rapper. "I want people to look at why I'm doing what I'm doing. And if you agree with that, you go do what you do about it."
"I've been fascinated for a long time about what it is that inspires people to become what they are," says the host of NPR's All Songs Considered. His new book, out now, is Your Song Changed My Life.
