Since the war on drugs began, some 5,000 people have been killed, 2,000 by police and 3,000 in extrajudicial killings. Reporter Michael Sullivan has been following the war in one Manila neighborhood.

President Duterte has vowed a more independent foreign policy, raising doubts about longstanding ties with the U.S. "We cannot forever be the little brown brothers," Duterte's foreign secretary said.

Duterte isn't winning friends in the U.S. with his tirades against President Obama and threats to downgrade military ties. The roots of his dislike of the U.S. go back more than a century.
