"The United States is the first government to publicly take action with respect to the most senior leadership of the Burmese military," the U.S. State Department said Tuesday.

"If the Russians were to engage in that in 2020, it would put our relationship in an even worse place than it has been," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said.

The secretary's trip has two goals: to reassure allies amid the Trump administration's mixed messages on troop levels in Syria and to stress the U.S. commitment to fighting ISIS and countering Iran.

The Saudi-led coalition has bombed markets, weddings and even a bus carrying kids during its three year campaign against Shiite Houthi rebels. The U.S. supports the coalition.

At a news conference on Friday, the secretary of state said the U.S. is "ready to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends."
