As of the first week of January, the state has disbursed about $124 million in private school vouchers, also known as Opportunity Scholarships, for the 2024-2025 school year.
The Republican-dominated North Carolina legislature has completed its override of Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of legislation that addresses both private school scholarship grants and immigration. The Senate voted on Wednesday to enact the bill despite Cooper's objections, one day after the House conducted a similar vote.
The majority of the candidates, predominantly consisting of Democrats, said they were against private school vouchers. The only candidate at the forum who disagreed was Michele Morrow, the Republican homeschooler running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
