Protests and court battles trailed the nearly two-year effort to get rid of the monuments. For the past month they've been acrimonious gathering places for those in favor and opposed to removal.
Since 1985, the state has celebrated the civil rights icon and Confederate general on the same day. A bill set to be signed into law removes Lee from King's federal holiday, bumping him to October.
"There may have been a time when that monument reflected who we were as a city, but times change. And so do we," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said when he announced the plan.
