The saxophone was invented by Adolph Sax in the mid-1800s and since then the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones have played sizable roles in 20th century chamber music, wind ensembles, and jazz bands. It's the instrument of choice for dozens of excellent contemporary composers, many of whom have selected The Red Clay Saxophone Quartet to premiere their works.
