Minneapolis will pay a record sum to the family of George Floyd, who sued the city and police officers over his May 2020 death in police custody.

Derek Chauvin was already facing manslaughter and second-degree murder charges when the much-anticipated trial opened this week.

The first potential juror said she's seen the video in which Chauvin holds Floyd down as Floyd says he can't breathe. "That's not fair, because we are humans, you know?" she said.

A Minnesota judge cited the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as reason to have Derek Chauvin's trial start on March 8, while the other officers involved in Floyd's death will have their trial in August.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office said a deputy shot and killed 23-year-old Casey Goodson on Friday. Law enforcement recovered a gun. Goodson's attorneys say he was licensed to carry a firearm.

João Alberto Silveira Freitas died after an encounter with security guards outside a grocery store in southern Brazil. It was partially captured on cellphone video and later posted to social media.

State Rep. Attica Scott was charged with first-degree rioting, which is a felony. She was also facing lesser charges of failure to the disperse and unlawful assembly. She called charges "bogus."
