Over 880,000 cases have been confirmed, as of Friday afternoon. New York City and the surrounding area have been hit hardest, with about half of all deaths coming from New York state or New Jersey.

"Any plan to start to reopen the economy has to be based on data and testing, and we have to make sure our antibody and diagnostic testing is up to the scale we need," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

And despite his combative tone on Monday, President Trump on Tuesday afternoon said he would be making decisions about how to reopen the economy in consultation with governors.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Sunday that 758 more New Yorkers have died from the coronavirus. It marked the sixth straight day of more than 700 deaths.

Cuomo says 731 people died on Monday. "Behind every one of those numbers is an individual, is a family, is a mother, is a father, is a brother, is a sister. So a lot of pain again today," he adds.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there were 599 coronavirus deaths statewide since Sunday. He said it may suggest a "possible flattening of the curve" but also warned numbers were inconclusive.

As hospitals warn of shortages, President Trump claims without offering evidence that he's hearing from administrators who are pleased with the current levels of supplies.
