First-time Latino voters have been a point of focus for Poder NC Action, a nonprofit working on getting black and brown North Carolina residents to the polls this November.

Both the Harris and Trump campaigns are ramping up their activity in North Carolina again after the storm. Trump has three North Carolina stops Monday, including a visit to see storm damage in Asheville. Former President Bill Clinton appeared last week with Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, and followed with several visits in eastern North Carolina.

The majority of the candidates, predominantly consisting of Democrats, said they were against private school vouchers. The only candidate at the forum who disagreed was Michele Morrow, the Republican homeschooler running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

More North Carolina residents turned out to cast ballots on the first day of early voting this year than in 2020, even as residents from the mountainous western portion of the state continued to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene.

Election officials have limited the hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but expanded dates to include weekends during the early voting period, which ends November 2.

Currently, commissioners live in assigned districts but are elected at large, meaning Watauga voters can choose their commissioners whether they live in the district or not. This year, commissioners will be chosen only by residents in those individual districts under a bill approved last year.

The latest method of voting to fall into the political crosshairs is the way overseas voters — including members of the military stationed abroad — cast their ballots.

Vice President Kamala Harris is meeting with Black leaders in North Carolina on Saturday and will attend church in the state ahead of a rally, according to her campaign. The weekend trip is her second time in the battleground state after it was struck by Hurricane Helene.
